ATRA Mining

ATRA members, including with government grants and support, have invested heavily in mine tyre recovery and recycling operations, especially throughout Western Australia.

ATRA and its members are working closely with regulators, manufacturers and miners to clear the path for much higher rates of recovery of the valuable material contained within a used mine tyre. With a recovery rate of only around 1% and the vast majority of used mining tyres being landfilled on site, the opportunities for growth in used mine tyre recovery are significant.

These used Off The Road (OTR) tyres offer unique and significant opportunities including for tyre to tyre recycling. The large volumes and high quality rubber in used OTR tyres (with mine tyres often weighing between 3-7 tonne) sees them being sought after for global markets.

ATRA will continue to present to stakeholders the value and opportunities in seeing OTR tyres recovered rather than simply dumped as a liability for future generations.

Regulations for mining tyres failing to deliver circular economy outcomes

A new Australian Tyre Recyclers Association report says outdated regulations are preventing the recycling of off-the-road mining tyres, with just 2 per cent currently recovered. Reform could unlock existing recycling infrastructure and support Australia's circular economy.
